The Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF)

OIF

The Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) is a non-profit organization with 300+ member companies, including the world's leading carriers and vendors. Being the only industry group uniting representatives from the data and optical networks, OIF's purpose is to accelerate the deployment of interoperable, cost-effective and robust optical internetworks and their associated technologies.

Avici has pioneered the standards-based, carrier-centric integration of IP and Optical networks for improved reliability, flexibility and cost-effectiveness. Avici was the first router vendor to publicly demonstrate standards-based provisioning using a unified IP-Optical control plane. The OIF UNI standard enables carriers to realize the benefits of IP-Optical integration, presenting a smooth migration path into existing carrier networks. The OIF UNI and E-NNI (Network-to-Network Interface) standards have been endorsed by leading carriers worldwide and are based on the ITU's requirements for automatically switched optical networks (ASON). With Avici routing platforms and OIF-UNI based IP-Optical integration, carriers can achieve substantial cost savings, improved network flexibility and higher reliability without the need to replace their entire optical switching network.
