Avici Systems Introduces Simple Secure Networks at SUPERCOMM 2005

RAPID Technology Demonstration, OIF World Interoperability Demo, and Presentations by Avici Executives Underscore Avici's Commitment to Simplifying IP Networks

Chicago, June 7, 2005

Avici Systems (NASDAQ: AVCI) today announced its Simple Secure Networks™ strategy at SUPERCOMM 2005 through a variety of first-ever technology demonstrations and presentations that focus on allowing service providers to create and deploy networks that are inherently scalable, reliable and secure. Avici will showcase its patent-pending RAPID™ technology, its work with the OIF UNI World Interoperability Demo, and presentations by Avici executives to demonstrate the company's approach to simplifying IP networks.

Avici is showcasing a key component of its Simple Secure Networks strategy - its patented Reliable Alternate Paths for Internet Destinations (RAPID™), Avici's fast convergence solution which uses advanced routing algorithms to dramatically speed up recovery times from link and node failures by self-calculating optimum alternate paths without complex manual intervention.

Traditionally, each time a network protocol converges, it causes a service interruption that plays havoc with delay-sensitive/real-time applications such as voice, video and interactive gaming. The magnitude of this problem increases as a network scales. As a result, carriers are unable to offer high-margin, stringent service level agreements (SLAs) without using costly and complex manual protection mechanisms. Avici's RAPID delivers sub 50ms recovery times and is widely supported by the industry, receiving draft acceptance at the IETF.

In addition to its RAPID™ demonstration, Avici is one of two core router vendors participating in the widely anticipated OIF UNI Worldwide Interoperability Demo that will showcase the integration of a distributed optical control plane with Ethernet over SONET/SDH. This testbed is the first to explore technical issues of multi-layer signaling and routing in such a network. Benefits to carriers include more efficient networks that automate provisioning and better utilize existing infrastructures. Participating vendors such as Avici are working on-site at carrier lab locations in Asia, Europe and North America, culminating in a live, global real-time network test at SUPERCOMM 2005, booth # 50094.

Avici is also chairing an all-day TecForum sponsored by IEC and SUPERCOMM that includes senior executives from Avici Systems, AT&T, Deutsche Telekom AG, IP-Only, Nortel Networks, Isocore, and Verisign Communications Services. The TecForum workshop entitled, "Service Provider Strategies for Services and Networks Convergence" is designed to educate attendees on strategies for the convergence of networks, services and applications, focusing on VoIP and wireless.

"Avici's Simple Secure Networks strategy is designed to simplify IP networks, focusing on network fundamentals that solve immediate business issues for carriers and lower capital and operational expenses," said William Leighton, CEO of Avici Systems. "Avici is focused on delivering scalable, reliable and high-value routing solutions to service providers worldwide, and our routing solutions are created to make IP networks inherently simple, reliable and secure."
