Avici Systems Demonstrates Interoperability With Leading Optical Switch Vendors At IPoP 2005 In Tokyo, Japan
Integrated IP/Optical control plane architecture demostrates stability and interoperability required to move from lab to carrier networks
Tokyo, Japan, February 23, 2005 — Avici Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: AVCI), the specialist in high reliability routing solutions for the Internet, today announced that the company has successfully tested multi-vendor interoperability using the Optical Internetworking Forum's (OIF) User-to-Network Interface (UNI) implementation, in a live demonstration at the International Conference on IP/Optical Network (iPOP) held in Tokyo from February 21-22, 2005.
Avici has pioneered the standards-based, carrier-centric integration of IP and Optical networks for improved reliability, flexibility and cost-effectiveness. Avici was the first router vendor to publicly demonstrate standards-based provisioning using a unified IP/Optical control plane. The iPOP conference and interoperability demo represents a milestone in the development of unified IP/Optical control planes as they move from carrier and vendor laboratories to carrier production networks.
In the iPOP demo, Avici routers using the UNI signaling solution interoperated with optical switches to dynamically establish and remove links across the network. Based on Avici's comprehensive network cost models, such integrated control plane architectures can reduce network costs by up to 40% and improve network flexibility and reliability. Vendors participating in this demonstration include, Furukawa, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Juniper, NEC, NTT, Mitsubishi Electric and Sycamore Networks. The iPOP event is jointly sponsored by the Photonic Internet Lab and Isocore.
"With some of the highest fixed and wireless broadband penetration rates in the world, Japanese carriers and optical switch vendors are at the forefront of the emerging integrated IP-Optical internet," said Bill Leighton, chief executive officer of Avici Systems. "Avici is pleased to be participating in this event and helping to bring the integrated IP-Optical network closer to deployment."
The OIF UNI standard enables carriers to realize the benefits of IP/Optical integration, presenting a smooth migration path into existing carrier networks. The OIFUNI and E-NNI (Network-to-Network Interface) standards has been endorsed by leading carriers worldwide and are based on the ITU's requirements for automatically switched optical networks (ASON). With Avici routing platforms and OIF-UNI based IP/Optical integration, carriers can achieve substantial cost savings, improved network flexibility and higher reliability without the need to replace their entire optical switching network.
