Avici Systems Expands into Aggregation and Peering Router Market
Announces Release of IPriori 4.2 Software Enabling Simplification of the POP for Cost Savings, Increased Reliability, and Enhanced Security
N. Billerica, Mass., April 16, 2002 -- Avici Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: AVCI), the specialist in high reliability routing solutions for the Internet, today announced the immediate availability of its IPriori(TM) 4.2 software release for its family of carrier-class routers. Avici's robust IPriori 4.2 enables carriers to reduce the number of devices in their points of presence (POP) and better isolate and defend against denial of service (DoS) attacks.
Steve Kaufman, president and chief executive officer of Avici Systems said, "Today's financial pressures are prompting customers to re-evaluate the structure and expense of their existing networks. Carriers can leverage the features available on our platform to reduce the number of devices in their (POP). Our scalable platform combined with our advanced security features enables our customers to reduce operational costs, decrease management complexity, improve performance, and defend against denial of service attacks."
"Avici's expanded feature set is helping service providers simplify their POP architectures by removing costly layers of equipment and by bringing key core-equipment values such as reliability, scalability and performance to the network aggregation function while introducing advanced security features, "said Chris Nicoll, vice president of telecom infrastructure at analyst firm Current Analysis. Mr. Nicoll added, "Avici's distributed architecture and newly introduced NetFlow+, Port Mirroring and rate limiting capabilities provide a strong capability to improve the cost structure of the POP and protect it against security attacks."
Due to scale and reliability limitations of legacy routers, carriers today are forced to implement complex, costly multi-tiered POP architectures with separate aggregation and backbone router layers. This results in operational complexity and increased capital costs. Avici's platform enables carriers to consolidate these costly network layers into a single platform to reduce the complexity and cost of the POP.
Avici now offers an 8-port Gigabit Ethernet along with its 16 port OC-3c line card - which provide industry leading density on aggregation interfaces, 320 Gig-E and 640 OC-3 interfaces per 7' rack. In addition, Avici's newly introduced security features such as NetFlow+, Port Mirroring and Packet Filtering give carriers unrivalled tools to perform diagnostic traffic analysis and provide protection for their networks from attacks.
Release 4.2 enables carriers to support aggregation, peering, and core all in the same platform. This offers tremendous economic benefits to carriers by delivering 30-50% cost savings on Capex and Opex, industry leading reliability, advanced security, and increased performance.
