Avici Systems Ships Industry's First Scalable, Rack-Mountable Router

Brings Better Economics, Reliability and Scalability to Metro and Regional PoPs

N. Billerica, MA, October 9, 2001 -- Avici Systems (Nasdaq: AVCI), a leading provider of scalable and reliable core routing solutions for the Internet, today announced the SSR™ stackable switch router. The SSR™ is the industry's first stackable, scalable and rack-mountable OC-192c router, delivering industry-leading reliability and economics in a compact and affordable form factor.

The SSR is ideally suited for installation in regional/metro Points of Presences (PoPs) within large RBOC, IXC, PTT and ISP networks, and by carriers and service providers with smaller core network needs. The SSR maximizes carriers' operational savings and investment protection by using the same router modules, distributed Velociti™ architecture and proven IPriori™ software as Avici's flagship product, the TSR® scalable core router.

In addition, Avici announced enhancements to its TSR® to continue to drive cost-effective scalability and carrier-class reliability for the IP backbone in carrier networks. Together, the SSR and the TSR enable carriers to grow from five Gbps to over five Tbs of capacity, as their demand increases. Avici's unique architecture lowers the cost of building and operating IP networks and delivers the highest levels of network reliability to increase Internet services availability and profitability.

IntelliSpace, the world's first Ethernet IP broadband services provider, is testing the SSR in its network, which services more than 50,000 business users in more than 1,000 IntelliSpace wired buildings across 15 markets and 150 cities/communities.

"During the past seven years, IntelliSpace has focused on providing the fastest, most reliable and cost-effective broadband services to customers," said Carlo Lalomia, CTO and co-founder of IntelliSpace. "The SSR's scalability and reliability is attractive to us, as it can enable us to drive new services to our customers. In our network, the SSR can enhance the flexibility and applications available to businesses throughout the IntelliSpace network."

Sandia National Labs is using the TSR and the SSR in a testbed to demonstrate improved network and storage efficiencies for distant supercomputing requirements across an integrated end-to-end TCP/IP architecture. The project goal is to validate the baseline architecture necessary to incorporate application, storage and transport requirements in the most efficient manner across its wide area network (WAN).

"We are committed to providing a significant increase in storage I/O throughput across our wide area backbone," said Pete Dean, deputy director for Information Technology at Sandia. "Scalability, reliability and Quality of Service are key features necessary for Sandia to support the distributed computing requirements of our research community members. The combination of the TSR and the SSR has the potential to bring us closer to establishing the most efficient storage area network (SAN) and WAN infrastructure."

"Avici is providing our customers with the most reliable and cost-effective family of routers needed to support their customers and introduce new profitable services quickly into the market," said Steve Kaufman, president and CEO of Avici Systems. "Avici introduced the market to scalable routing. Now, with the SSR - the industry's first scalable, stackable, rack-mountable router - we are enabling new customers to improve the economics and availability of their Internet services."

Avici SSR Features

  • 19" or 23" rack-mountable form factor;
  • 20 slots per chassis for highest density;
  • Support for interfaces ranging from OC-3c to OC-192c and Gigabit Ethernet;
  • OC-768c capable;
  • Five Gbps to 200 Gbps aggregate capacity per chassis;
  • Two redundant server slots; and
  • MPLS LDP, RSVP-TE and Fast Reroute.

The SSR is fully compatible with the TSR and uses the same Velociti™ distributed switch fabric, robust IPriori™ software, router modules, Command Line Interface, and Quality of Service and Multi-protocol Label Switching (MPLS) features to deliver unmatched reliability, scalability and backward and forward compatibility.

New TSR Enhancements
The Avici TSR is enhanced with form factor improvements that include 60 percent additional fiber management capacity. New TSR reliability features include four redundant server slots and MPLS fast reroute/local protection. Unlike competitive products, these server slots do not use capacity that generates revenue-supporting customer ports.

About IntelliSpace
Started in 1995 as one of the catalysts behind Silicon Alley, IntelliSpace is the world's first Ethernet IP broadband services provider. Through its 10 Gigabit Ethernet network, IntelliSpace provides the fastest connection to the Internet in the world-6,500 times faster than a T-1 connection. IntelliSpace's innovative bandwidth-on-demand solution, e-Valve, allows business customers to instantly upgrade their bandwidth via circuits or fiber-based Metropolitan Area Networks. Because its network is comprised of both lit and dark fiber, IntelliSpace has access to virtually 100% of the market place.

With the help of strategic partners, such as: Aprisma, Avici Systems (NASD:AVCI), Cable & Wireless (NYSE:CWP), Cabletron Systems (NASD:CS), CaleWorx, Global Crossing (NYSE:GX), Level 3 (LVLT), and Riverstone Networks (NASD:RSTN), IntelliSpace provides broadband services daily to more than 50,000 business users around the globe.

IntelliSpace operates in 15 markets through which it services over 150 cities and communities in the US and Europe. For information on IntelliSpace, visit www.intellispace.net
