Avici Names Chris Simpson Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales, Marketing and Service

Veteran Telecom Executive to Lead Avici's Global Customer Efforts

N. Billerica, MA, October 1, 2001 -- Avici Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:AVCI), a leading provider of scalable and reliable core routing solutions for the Internet, today announced that Chris Simpson has joined Avici and will be responsible for Avici's worldwide sales, marketing and services efforts. He will report directly to Avici President and Chief Executive Officer Steve Kaufman.

Simpson most recently served as senior vice president, sales for CIENA Corporation. During his tenure, CIENA rapidly grew its revenue and expanded the number of large carriers using its products. Over this same period, the sales team introduced and successfully deployed the CoreDirector switch in multiple key accounts in North America.

From 1998 to 2000, Simpson was vice president of sales, marketing and international operations for Harris Corporation's RF Communications. From 1988 to 1998, he held several senior sales and marketing
positions at Qualcomm, Inc., including senior vice president/general manager of worldwide sales and marketing, and senior vice president of strategic marketing.
