Step 4 Torque the nuts to 85-in.-lb.
Power Requirements
The QSR chassis uses a dual -48 Vdc power inputs for redundant distribution throughout the chassis. Redundancy prevents the failure of one power input from affecting another and minimizes power outages.
Main power from the customer's -48 Vdc power distribution system (with battery backup) supplies power to the QSR through the field wired terminal block.
At the shelf level, a redundant pair of power supply inputs (one for each power feed bank) provides a -48 Vdc power interface to the backplane.
One of two methods distributes primary power to the QSR chassis:
- Through direct feeds from the building DC power source (if collocated with QSR chassis lineup)
- Through an intermediate power distribution center (if power source is not collocated with QSR chassis lineup)
Both methods require that all source feeds (A and B) to a QSR chassis lineup be from a single dedicated power source. For the best results, use one source for both A and B feeds.
Power Input
The following are the power input, cable sizing, and upstream breaker requirements for the QSR:
- Each power input requires 70 amps minimum.
- Each redundant breaker panel requires one (1) 70-amp power input for a total of two 70-amp inputs.
- Each input requires its own return, for a total of two returns.
- All power input cabling must comply with local electrical codes for the location where the QSR is being installed. The pertinent electrical codes govern the sizing of upstream circuit protection, minimum cable ampacity, and voltage drop requirements.
- Voltage drop for each input cable should be less than 1 Vdc.
- All input and return wires must be terminated with a UL-listed right-angle two-hole compression lug with a 1/4-inch bolt hole and spacing as shown in Figure 3-4.

Step 7 Reattach the terminal strip cover. The cover is a safety feature that you must install.
Step 8 Flip the breaker switches up to the ON position to power on the QSR. See Figure 3-1 on page 3-2 for switch location.
Installing Components
If you removed the filler modules while rack mounting the chassis, you can reinstall them and install any other modules (route controller modules, router modules, and fabric filler modules) once the QSR is grounded.
![]()
CAUTION (C:3-2) To prevent damage to the QSR and its components, always wear a grounded antistatic wrist strap when installing modules. See the following section for details on using the wrist strap.
Using the Antistatic Wrist Strap
Use a grounded antistatic wrist strap to protect the SSR chassis and components from damage caused by static electricity.
PROCEDURE: Use the following steps to attach the antistatic wrist strap:
Step 1 Remove the alligator clip from the grounding pin on the antistatic wrist strap.
Step 2 Insert the grounding pin into the electrostatic discharge (ESD) jack on the front or back of the QSR chassis (see Figure 3-8). Use the ESD jack closest to where you will be working.
Step 3 Put the other end of the wrist strap on your wrist.
Step 4 Keep the wrist strap connected to the ESD jack and on your wrist while handling any QSR modules or boards.

QSR Module Population Rules
A SSR chassis comprises a single shelf with 10 slots to house route controller modules, router modules, and filler modules. Figure 3-9 shows QSR slot numbering when viewed from the front of the QSR.
Figure 3-9. SSR Slot Numbering
![]()
When installed in the QSR, a module uses the chassis number and the slot number as its identifier. For example, in a single-chassis system, module 1/8 identifies the module that resides in slot 8. In a multi-chassis system, module 2/10 resides in chassis 2, slot S10.
The QSR accepts only NSR®-compliant Route Controller Modules.
The QSR accepts router modules from two module families. Roman numerals on the faceplate label identify Family 2 router modules. Figure 3-10 shows a 4-Port OC-48c faceplate label identifying the module as a Family 2 module.
Figure 3-10. Family 2 Label Identification
![]()
Table 3-1 shows module family designations.
Router modules can reside in any available slot, providing they adhere to QSR population rules. Some restrictions apply when using modules from different families.
See the sections that follow for population rules and restrictions.
Populating a Single Chassis
The location of the router modules within a chassis maximizes the performance of each router module. Because each user's configuration differs in its combination of Family 1 and Family 2 modules, the CLI command - show population - is used to populate the chassis. Use of the show population command allows a user to populate a chassis and maximize the capacity of each particular configuration.
The show population command determines the optimum router module population order. The show population command displays configurations supporting an optimized overall population. To ensure optimum performance, use the show population command when inserting router modules.
NOTE The CLI command show population always takes precedence.
A single-chassis configuration accepts 1 or 2 route controller modules and up to 9 router modules.
Rules for populating a single QSR with modules are as follows:
- Install the primary and secondary route controller modules in slots S10 and S1, respectively.
- When using only one route controller module, install it in slot S10. Use slot S1 for a router, filler, or fabric filler module.
Because there may be instances where an installer does not have immediate access to the CLI command line upon installation, this document addresses the initial installation of four router modules.
- Install the first two router modules in slots 5 and 6. If installing router module from one Family, install the initial 4 router modules in the following slot order:
- 4 and 7
- Figure 3-11 shows the proper slot population sequence with router modules from one Family only:
Figure 3-11. Populating the QSR
![]()
- Flank every router module with another router module, a route controller module, or a fabric filler module.
- Fabric filler modules ensure multiple communications routes between installed router modules. You must install fabric filler modules like bookends around banks of router modules that would otherwise have empty slots adjacent to them.
- For example, your QSR has five router modules installed in slots 3 through 7. Install fabric filler modules in slots 2 and 8. Install standard filler modules in slots S1 and 9. See Figure 3-12.
Figure 3-12. Installing Two Fabric Filler Modules
![]()
- Or, your QSR contains a single route controller module in slot S10 and eight router modules in slots 2 through 9. Install a fabric filler module in slot S1. See Figure 3-13.
Figure 3-13. Installing One Fabric Filler Module
![]()
NOTE Fabric filler modules differ from standard filler modules. See "Fabric Filler Module" for more information.
- If mixing router module families, keep modules from the same family together on one side of the modules in slots 5 and 6. Put modules from the other family on the other side.
- For example, you install a Family 2 router module in slot 7. Put only Family 2 router modules to the right of slot 7. Put Family 1 router modules to the left of slot 5.
NOTE If you install a Family 2 router module in slot 4, put only Family 2 modules to the left of slot 4. Put Family 1 modules to the right of slot 6.
- Figure 3-14 illustrates slot population with modules from both families. Slots 5 and 6 in this illustration can contain Family 1 modules, Family 2 modules, or a Family 1 module in slot 5 and a Family 2 module in slot 6.
Figure 3-14. Installing Modules from Different Families
![]()
- If the router modules in slots 5 and 6 are from different families:
- Put modules from the same family as the module installed in slot 5 to the left of slot 5.
- Put modules from the same family as the module installed in slot 6 to the right of slot 6.
- After installation of the first four router modules, use the show population - specifying the module family - command to identify the next slot to populate.
- Install standard filler modules in empty slots next to fabric filler modules. Add standard filler modules to any other empty slots in the chassis. During QSR operation, standard filler modules ensure proper cooling and eliminate electromagnetic interference.
Refer to the IPriori CLI Reference and Configuration Guides (Vol. 1) for further information on this command. An the online version of the manual is available at http://www.avici.com/documentation.
Populating Multiple Chassis
Population rules for a second chassis are the same as those for the first, with the following differences. The second chassis
- Does not require a route controller module and can house up to 10 router modules.
- Requires a minimum of two router modules installed in slot 5 and slot 6.
- Requires that the first QSR be completely populated with router or route controller modules.
NOTE Completely populate the first QSR with router modules and route controller modules before populating a second QSR.
After installing modules in slots 5 and 6 of the second QSR, continue to populate the chassis following the population rules in "Populating a Single Chassis".
Preparing for Module Installation
Use the following precautions to prevent damage from static electricity to the QSR and modules:
- Do not handle modules unless you are using the appropriate antistatic protection, such as an antistatic wrist strap, or heel strap and conductive mat.
- When using the antistatic wrist strap, verify that the cord is properly grounded.
- Handle modules by the faceplate and outer enclosure only. Do not touch electrical connections, pins, or soldered surfaces.
![]()
CAUTION (C:3-3) When handling circuit cards, wear a grounded antistatic wrist strap or equivalent protection to avoid damaging electrostatic parts.
Installing Router Modules
Router modules are shipped separately. The documentation packaged with the router module contains detailed instructions on installing the module in the QSR. See the QSR Router Module Field Replacement Procedure.
Installing Route Controller Modules
Route controller modules are shipped separately. The documentation packaged with the route controller module contains detailed instructions on installing the module in the QSR. See the QSR Route Controller Module Field Replacement Procedure.
Installing Fabric Filler Modules
Fabric filler modules are shipped separately. The documentation packaged with the fabric filler module contains detailed instructions on installing the module in the QSR. See the QSR Fabric Filler Module Field Replacement Procedure.
Installing Filler Modules
If empty slots remain after you finish populating the QSR, install standard filler modules in the open slots as described next.
NOTE Verify that fabric filler modules fill the empty slots immediately adjacent to a bank of router modules. See "QSR Module Population Rules" for more information.
Once the QSR is operational, install a filler module in the slot within five minutes of removing a router or server.
PROCEDURE: Use the following steps to install filler modules:
Step 1 Check that the lock latches are retracted to allow the module to slide into the slot.
Step 2 Align the module with the card guides and slide the module until it is seated in the slot.
Step 3 Turn the two lock latches to secure the filler module (see Figure 3-15).
