Using the SSR Lift

The Stackable Switch Router (SSR) lift allows installation and removal of the SSR from industry standard racks. The lift supports the SSR during installation and removal and also allows easy adjustment of rack mounting ears if necessary.

Features of the SSR lift are (see Figure 1 and Figure 2):

For detailed instructions to remove and repackage the SSR chassis from a packing crate, refer to "Stackable Switch Router Install Guide" (Part No. 04113-00).

Installing the SSR Chassis

Use the 2-wheel lift to support the SSR in the rack while connecting the rack mounting ears to the rack.

WARNING (1) The SSR is heaviest at the rear of the unit. It is 165 lb empty and 242 lb with shipped components. Use safe lifting procedures when moving the unit to avoid personal injury. At least three people are necessary to leverage the unit.

Avici recommends that the first SSR chassis be mounted in the bottom of the rack with a minimum of 48.2 mm (1.7") clearance between it and the equipment above (see Figure 3).

WARNING (2) The SSR installation procedures apply to the initial installation of the router. These procedures assume that you have not yet connected power to the unit.

PROCEDURE: Use the following procedure to mount an SSR into an installed rack:

Step 1 Position the front or rear of the SSR facing the installed rack, to the rear if using a 19" or 23" rack or in the front if using a 23" rack.

Step 2 If a moving strap was used during transport, remove it from the SSR and put aside.

Step 3 Using a #2 Phillips screwdriver, remove the removable handles (see Figure 4).

Figure 4. Removable Handles on the SSR

Step 4 Slowly pump the foot pedal on the lift to position the chassis in the rack and line up the mounting ears on the chassis with the rack mounting ears (see Figure 3).

NOTE Be sure there is enough room to remove the lift once the chassis has been secured in the rack.

Step 5 Use the lock lever to lock the wheels of the 2-wheel lift when the SSR is in position.

Step 6 Beginning at the bottom of the rack ears and alternating from side to side, use a 18" ratchet extension (if needed) to install the twelve (12) 10-32 panhead (panel mount) screws (six per side) through the 10-32 nut clips and into the mounting ears on the chassis.

Step 7 Unlock the wheels of the lift and carefully remove it after securing the chassis in the rack.

Removing the SSR Chassis

Use the 2-wheel lift to support the SSR in the rack while disconnecting the rack mounting ears from the rack and to move the SSR. After removing the SSR from the rack, reattach the removable handles if the chassis needs to be lifted.

If the chassis is being removed from the front, note that the SSR is heaviest in the rear and follow safety precautions while moving.

WARNING (3) The SSR is heaviest at the rear of the unit. It is 165 lb empty and 242 lb with shipped components. Use safe lifting procedures when moving the unit to avoid personal injury. At lease three people are necessary to leverage the unit.

PROCEDURE: Use the following procedure to remove the SSR chassis from a rack:

Step 1 Using the 2-wheeled lift, position the lift underneath the SSR in the rack and lock the wheels (see Figure 5).

Figure 5. SSR Lift Features

Step 2 Beginning at the top of the rack mounting ears and working alternately from side to side, use a 18" ratchet extension (if needed) and a #2 Phillips screwdriver to remove the twelve (12) 10-32 panhead (panel mount) screws (six per side) that secure the rack mounting ears to the rack.

Step 3 Slide the SSR onto the lift (if necessary) and unlock the lift wheels (see Figure 5). Unlock the wheels and slowly move the chassis out of the rack. If necessary, lower the lift by slowly pumping the release lever (see Figure 5).

Step 4 Use a come-a-long strap to secure the chassis to the lift if moving the SSR a long distance.
