pim Messages

This chapter describes messages generated by the pim subsystem.

Major

Message: pim_send: (<number>) only sent <length> of <total length> bytes

Meaning: This message occurs when the PIM on TSR fails to send whole PIM message.

Action: Save your system log to a file and contact Avici Customer Support.

Message: pim_send: (<number>) send error <number>

Meaning: This message occurs when the PIM on TSR fails to send PIM message.

Action: Save your system log to a file and contact Avici Customer Support.

Message: pim_start_ifap[<name>]: called for non-pimable ifap (<address>)

Meaning: Either IGMP static or PIMSM can own an interface. When an upstream interface is added to a multicast route entry and if the interface is not owned by PIM then message is logged.

Action: Save your system log to a file and contact Avici Customer Support.

Message: pimsm_add_static_rp[<name>]: grp(<group address>) creation failed

Meaning: This message occurs when a static RP is added to a particular group address and a group structure cannot be created for that group.

Action: Save your system log to a file and contact Avici Customer Support.

Message: pimsm_add_static_rp[<name>]: rpset creation failed

Meaning: This message occurs when a static RP is added to reset table and the corresponding reset table does not exist. The rpset table may not exist when the creation of the rpset table fails.

Action: Save your system log to a file and contact Avici Customer Support.

Message: pimsm_group_change: could not create (*, <group address>)

Meaning: This message occurs when we receive a igmp new group membership. If the (*,G) entry does not exist then we create one. If we are unable to create the (*,G) entry then the message is logged.

Action: Save your system log to a file and contact Avici Customer Support.

Message: pimsm_grp_join_recv[<name>]: could not create (*, <group address>/<group mask>)

Meaning: When a group join is received by PIMSM from the lower level routines , we try to create a (*,G) entry and if this fails then we log this message.

Action: Save your system log to a file and contact Avici Customer Support.

Message: pimsm_grp_join_recv[<name>]: grp creation failed for (<group address>, <group mask>)

Meaning: When a group join is received by PIMSM from the lower level routines, we try to create a group structure. If this fails then we log this message.

Action: Save your system log to a file and contact Avici Customer Support.

Message: pimsm_jp_create: No nbrs to send Join

Meaning: When a join/prune message is built for an interface and there are no neighbors on that interface then this message is logged.

Action: Save your system log to a file and contact Avici Customer Support.

Message: pimsm_jp_recv[<name>]: could not create (<source address>, <group address>)

Meaning: When a join message is received for a group G with source S , if a corresponding (S,G) entry doesnot exist we create one. If the creation of (S,G) entry fails then this message is logged.

Action: Save your system log to a file and contact Avici Customer Support.

Message: pimsm_jp_recv[<name>]: could not create (*, <group address>)

Meaning: When a join message is received for a group G and corresponding (*,G) entry doesnot exist then we try to create (*, G) entry. If the creation of the (*,G) entry fails then this message is logged.

Action: Save your system log to a file and contact Avici Customer Support.

Message: pimsm_jp_recv[<name>]: could not create RP-Set entry for (<source address> , <group address>)

Meaning: When a join/prune message is received and we don't have a rpset then we use the neighbor's rpset information. If we are unable to use neighbor's rpset information too, then this message is logged.

Action: Save your system log to a file and contact Avici Customer Support.

Message: pimsm_mrt_create_wc[<name>]: could not create (*, <group address>)

Meaning: When we create a new (*,G) entry in the PIM multicast routing table , and it fails then we log this message.

Action: Save your system log to a file and contact Avici Customer Support.

Message: pimsm_probe_commence[<name>] called with an empty probe list

Meaning: As mentioned before if the probe list is NULL and we try to commence the probe timer then this message is logged.

Action: Save your system log to a file and contact Avici Customer Support.

Message: pimsm_probe_schedule[<name>]: job already running

Meaning: A probe job is used to send probes(NULL register packets) and to timeout register suppression messages. If the job already exists and we try to schedule another probe job then this message is logged.

Action: Save your system log to a file and contact Avici Customer Support.

Message: pimsm_reg_create_vif[<name>]: could not find an ifap to clone

Meaning: When PIM is enabled, we create a virtual interface. This is used to send and receive register packets. When we do not have a loopback interface and we are unable to create a virtual interface then this message is logged.

Action: Save your system log to a file and contact Avici Customer Support.

Message: pimsm_reg_delete_vif[<name>]: could not find an ifap to clone

Meaning: When PIM is disabled, we need to delete the virtual interface that is used to receive and send register packets. When we don't have a loopback interface and we try to remove the virtual interface then this message is logged.

Action: Save your system log to a file and contact Avici Customer Support.

Message: pimsm_reg_notify[<name>]: creation failed for (<source address>, <group address>)

Meaning: When we receive a register message and we cannot create a (S,G) entry or a (*,G) entry then this message is logged.

Action: Save your system log to a file and contact Avici Customer Support.

Message: pimsm_sg_creation_recv[<name>] create failed (<source address>, <multicast group>)SPT

Meaning: When the kernel receives a cache miss, PIM gets a (S,G) creation from lower level routines. If we are not the RP for this group G , but we are the DR for the interface and the source S is not the RP, then we add a (S,G) entry to pim multicast routing table or when we are not the RP and we have a (*,G) entry . If adding of an (S,G) entry fails then we Log this message.

Action: Save your system log to a file and contact Avici Customer Support.

Message: pimsm_sg_creation_recv[<name>] create failed (<source address>, <group address>)SPT for MRT expanded

Meaning: When PIM receives a (S,G) creation from lower level routines, we add a (S,G) entry to PIM routing table if we are not the RP for group G and we don't have (*,G) entry. If the addition of (S,G) expanded entry fails then this message is logged.

Action: Save your system log to a file and contact Avici Customer Support.

Minor

Message: PIM neighbor (<address>) discovered

Meaning: A neighbor has been discovered.

Action: No action required.

Message: PIM neighbor (<address>) is lost due to connection being lost

Meaning: A neighbor loss event occurred due to PIM being disabled on an interface or the interface went down.

Action: No action required.

Message: PIM neighbor (<address>) is lost due to timeout

Meaning: Specifies that a neighbor loss event occurred due to the expiration of a hold timer.

Action: No action required.

Message: pimsm_bsr_recv: create rp <source address> failed

Meaning: This message is logged when we try to create an RP for a particular group G and it fails to create a RP. This happens when we receive a BSR message and we try to create a RP.

Action: Save your system log to a file and contact Avici Customer Support.

Message: pimsm_bsr_recv[<task>] New BSR: <address>, pri <priority>

Meaning: A new BSR has been elected.

Action: No action required.

Message: pimsm_bsr_recv[<name>] ignoring a less prefered bsr <BSR address>-<BSR priority> than <PIM-SM address>-<PIM-SM priority>

Meaning: If we are a C-BSR and we receive a new bsr packet from legit source but the priority of received BSR packet is lower we ignore the packet. This message is logged when we ignore the new bsr packet.

Action: Save your system log to a file and contact Avici Customer Support.

Message: pimsm_crp_send[<task>]: cannot locate RPF router for the BSR: <bsr address>

Meaning: There is no route to BSR in CRP.

Action: No action required.
