password


Sets the password for logging in on this line.

Syntax: password [0 | 7] password

0

The following text string is entered as clear text and encrypted before being saved.

7

The following string is already encrypted.

password

An alphanumeric string between 4 and 20 characters in length.

Use the password 0 password command to indicate that the text string is entered in clear text. The string is encrypted before it is saved.

Use the password 7 password command to indicate that the string is already encrypted. For example, if you cut and paste this command from another configuration file, the password is already encrypted.

If no password is explicitly configured for this line, the system password (configured using the system-password command) is used.

Factory Default: The password defined by the system-password command.

Command Mode: Line configuration.

Example: In the following example, the password command sets the password for this line to newpassword. The 0 indicates that the text string is not already encrypted.

NOTE All passwords are stored as encrypted strings. The 0 and 7 options enable you to enter either text strings or already encrypted strings.

router#configure terminal

Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.

router(config)#line console 0

router(config-line)#password 0 newpassword
